NGUH VICTOR CHUNG, A COMPUTER ANALYST AND TECHNICAL RESOURCE PERSON FOR MTN IN DONGA/MANTUNG DIVISION, ON THE OCCASION OF THE
26TH ANIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF THE C.P.D.M PARTY TODAY THE 24TH MARCH, 2011
AT NDU MUNICIPAL GRAND STAND.

The Divisional Officer for Ndu Sub Division
The Central Committee Resource Persons
The Section President, Donga/Mantung II
Heads of Services
Traditional and Religious Authorities
Dear Comrades
Ladies and Gentlemen

Importance of Information Communication and Technology in the Rural World is what I will be talking on

Before I continue, I want to thank the organizers for this wonderful opportunity they have given me to talk about ICT in this big occasion.

Gone are those days where people use to think that computers or mobile phones are made for the intellectuals. We are in the 21st century and must dance according to the tone of the change of time. Many of you here present will bear with me that almost everything in the world is been computerized. Though ICT has really changed the world, it has few disadvantages. This is normal because we know that where there is no positive, there is no negative. I’m going to talk much on the good side of it but it will not be good if I don’t talk about the black side.

When we embrace ICT, our doors are opened to many good things. Look at these few examples below

• Creation of Jobs: Our head of state His Excellency President Paul Biya, a few weeks a go launched a recruitment of 25,000 Cameroonian youths. Job opening number 20 is for Data Processors. This is an encouraging step and many Cameroonians will have what to eat, thanks to ICT. There are many NGOs in Cameroon, Banks, Money Transfer Agencies, Credit Unions, Schools, Hospitals, Security Offices and a lot more that depend mainly on computers. Thus, the need of Computer Operators. If we embrace this field, we will not lack what to eat.
• Cheap and Fast Communication: Some of us here seated have children or relations in different towns talk less of different countries. Imagine how much it will take you to go and meet them to discuss on some important things. If leaving Ndu to Bamenda and back is not less than 10,000frs, what more of going out of Cameroon? With the availability of the Internet, you can go and deliver a 100 page message to your son or relation in USA at a cost of less than 300frs. Is that not fantastic? There is even what we call instant messaging that you can sit and discuss with any one any where in the world for even two hours and it is going to cost you less than 600frs. Think of the risk to go and submit your report to your Boss out of Ndu? With the availability of the Net, you will do that relaxing in your office or house and the cost will be far cheaper.
• Development: With the coming of ICT, many companies, NGOs and other Charitable organizations in develop world are looking for partners in developing countries so as to help them grow. Most of those organizations prefer to work in rural areas. For us to benefit from this kind gesture, we need to be IT literate. It takes less than a day in Google for an Authentic organization to have partner(s) abroad. I know of many water projects, hospitals, schools, just to name but a few that exist thanks to foreign aid by the help of ICT.
• Facilitates both learning and teaching process: I visited one school in one sub division and was astonished to see it using books that were written some two decades ago. With the coming of the ICT, there are applications with billions of updated books that both teachers and students can use for their research. One can write more effectively by means of a computer. There are tools like spelling and grammar checker, thesaurus and dictionary, installed in the computer. Thus, it takes less time to proofread a written document and also, there is no need to open up a dictionary book to look for meanings of words. Typing is much faster than writing on a paper. If there is a need for reorganizing the sentences or paragraphs, one can cut and paste and make the necessary changes. Thus, overall, a computer allows the user to create documents, edit, print, and store them so that they can be retrieved later.

Because of time, I will like to talk a little about the ills of this ICT.

• Internet Scamming: We need to be careful. There are people out there that will disguise to be who they are not and extort money from us. For example: On the 2nd of February 2011, I got a text message in my phone, I quote “YOUR MOBILE NUMBER HAS WON YOU THE SUM OF $2,000,000USD IN ONGOING FREELOTTO PROMO. FOR CLAIMS SEND EMAIL (NAME AND MOBILE NUMBER) TO: freelottoaggent73@aol.co.uk”. Did I play any lotto? These are thieves that will deal with you if you fall for them.
• Lies telling: How many of us have answered a telephone call here in Ndu and tell our caller that we are in Kumbo or Bamenda? No need to stress on this point.
• Promiscuity: It is important for parents to keep a check on the browsing habits of their children as some websites are not meant for their viewing, especially Adult Sites. There is a say that a bad thing is easily copied and this is also true in the ICT world. Let me seize this opportunity to warn our youths that internet marriages are not secured so they should avoid them seriously.
• Impact on the Environment: Computer manufacturing processes and computer waste are depleting natural resources and polluting the environment.

To round up, I’ll like to plead with the elites of Ndu Sub Division to see how updated computer centers can be created here so that her people feel the touch of the 21st Century. I’m available to give any technical assistance to any one if need be.

Long Live Donga/Mantung CPDM II Section
Long Live Information Communication and Technology
Long Live The Republic of Cameroon

Contact Details:
Nguh Victor Chung
Website: www.computerforallruralpeople.blogspot.com
Emails: nguhvic3000@yahoo.com, nguhvic3000@gmail.com, nguhvic3000@aol.com
Tel: +237 77361898 or +237 96952617
P.O Box 12 Ndu

AIM, MISSION AND GOALS

Project Aim:

· To improve education in rural communities through establishing and equipping of computer education centres

· To create ICT jobs

· To build self-esteem & integrity

· To use ICT to create wealth in disadvantaged communities.

· To provide ICT scholarship to members of local associations, churches, schools or communities who will in turn train members of their local associations, churches, schools or communities in various aspects of computer programming, engineering, maintenance, management and leadership.

· To secure the involvement of partners, including the private sector, civil society, global organizations, academic institutions and bilateral donors, drawing in their knowledge and expertise, technical and financial benevolence in order to facilitate computer education in rural communities.

Project Mission: To empower the youth in rural communities with computer education which will include knowledge in computer programming, desktop publishing and technical skills in computer engineering – installation, assembly and repairs . Imagine that you have to write a small letter and send to America from Africa by using the manual method. How long shall it take the letter to reach America by Post? Imagine that you have to call in locally or internationally using your mobile phone. Think of how much it is going to cost you. Imagine that you have to travel a long distance just to see a friend.

My readers, these are just a few hints about how the computer has changed lives. It takes less than a minute after clicking the send button for a mail to arrive on any destination. With Instant messaging like Skype and Yahoo! Messenger, one can talk till he/she is satisfied and pay little or no money. With the use of a webcamera, everyone can see his/her friend or family member at any given time.

All of this is done by people that have received computer training and have the chance to use the net. An artist once said in one of his songs that "Blessed is the hands that giveth than the ones that taketh". I was shocked when I was visiting some Sub Divisions in Bui and Boyo Divisions of the North West Region of Cameroon. Many people have never even seen a computer. With my knowledge in Computing and my expertise in the field as a Technician and Instructor, knowing full well that any hand that giveth shall be blessed, I've decided to offer the little that I have to make sure that I change the lives of some of the rural people. My target is the students.

My reason for deciding to go with students is because many of them are going to increase their knowledge in all areas thanks to computers. Many schools depend on books that were written many years back and the knowledge may be outdated. If these students are given computing education, they can use the net to search for the latest information as far as their subjects are concerned. In places where there is no net, they can use other research softwares like Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia etc.

My Plea:

To accomplish my mission, I need some hands to support me financially, materially, and even in person because a single hand cannot tie a bundle. If you are interested in fostering computing education in rural areas, let me know and I will tell you how I'm operating.

Contact
Nguh Victor Chung
Computer Technician and Instructor Ndu Sub Division
Donga/Mantung Division
North West Region

Tel: +23777361898
        +23796952617
P.O Box 12 Ndu
E-mails: nguhvic3000@gmail.com
nguhvic3000@aol.com
nguhvic3000@hotmail.com
nguhvic3000@yahoo.com
